Truckery

A mobile application that aims to bring exposure to local street vendors and food trucks in the food service industry.

Overview.

Context

Many people are unaware of the diverse and ethnic dishes offered bhy local vendors that are potentially less than a mile away from their current location, mainly by the faults of popular food location applications such as yelp, Google Maps, Zomato, and others. These applications fail to identify family owned street vendors as efficient food options, and rather support large chain restaurants and fast food. My application aims to solve this problem by only offering food options from local vendors or food trucks in order to support the success of small businesses.

The Problem.

Local Food Trucks are struggling to gain exposure and build a strong customer base as common food-locating applications only highlight large chain restaurants.

For this project, I aimed to create a simple, fun, and interactive application. As this project was for an entrepreneurial class during college, I focused more on designing the user interface to fit the business problem rather than conducting the usual UX process. I am consistently reiterating over my designs from this project, and this case study is currently in the works with user testing!

Solution Breakdown.

Map Screen -

Users can use the map screen to locate food trucks in their area.

Search Filter -

Users have the option to filter their search results by sorting, cuisine type, dietary concerns, price, location, and average customer rating. This enhances user experience by allowing a variety of filters to get the results that they actually want.

Favorites -

Allows users to favorite food trucks or specific food items from various food trucks. This helps users maintain a log of all their favorite dishes and cuisines!

Food Truck Page -

The Food truck page highlights the location, rating, as well as items that customers have left high reviews for. The food truck page also provides the entire menu so that users can get a look at what is offered before arriving to the truck.

User Profile -

The users profile holds other information about the users activity such as their favorites and review list, as well as promotions that they have saved for later use.

Research.

Market Analysis

As this project was heavily involved with understanding the current market and potential openings for success in a particular industry, my research was conducted primarily through IBIS World.

According to the IBIS report for the Street Food industry, this problem landscapes the street food industry as a whole, as there is evidence of
high fragmentation and low- revenue within the market. This problem is also underserved and unworkable- according to the IBIS Report- Street Vendors in the U.S, “the industry is highly competitive as street vendors compete with other food service operators” (Daly, 2021) which underlies the extraneous difficulty street vendors have in promoting their businesses as they are often overshadowed. Furthermore, the total revenue for the industry is only 1.7bn and a profit margin of 6.9%, this indicates an extremely small space for food truck businesses to increase profit which could be solved with higher exposure from a curated app.

Reflections & Takeaways.

This project is still in the works! I still have lots to learn so check back soon for the full case study!
